This past week’s Quilting Circle brought up several topics that pop up in my DMs with fair regularity: What books do I recommend for homemaking/homeschooling/faith? I started to toss a few titles onto an IG story when I realized that wasn’t going to work. I’ve been a homemaker for nearly 26 years, and have been homeschooling almost as long. A couple of IG slides would be overwhelming if I shoved all those titles in one spot!
So instead, I put together Idea Lists on Amazon to give you not just a title and cover, but the chance to read the reviews others have written as well as to compare with other books that might be more your style.
This week, I’m highlighting Homemaking Inspiration titles, and yes, this is a wide swath of ground covered. From learning to mend just about anything to baking the perfect cake from an old Mennonite recipe, these books have all contributed in some way to my homemaking skills or joy. I’ll highlight just a few:
Where There is No Doctor: A Village Healthcare Handbook sounds like an odd addition to a homemaking bookshelf but I assure you, it’s not. This book is well known amongst missionaries in developing nations, and with good reason. It covers (and triages) all sorts of medical mysteries.
The Hidden Art of Homemaking is a classic, and with good reason. You may be familiar with the author, Edith Schaeffer, who co-founded L'Abri with her husband, Francis. Edith was a wife, mother, and homemaker who believed that Christ gave her the gift of creativity to bless her family first.
and finally,
A Cabin Full of Food is quite possibly the most useful cookbook I’ve ever gotten my hands on. Calling it a “cookbook” feels insufficient. It has hundreds of recipes, from homemade ketchup to universal baking mixes to some of our favorite applesauce oatmeal muffins. But that’s just part of what this book offers. It gives growing advice, storage advice, canning recipes, you name it… anything you can possibly grow, this book will tell you how to use!
There are 40+ titles on the Homemaking Inspiration list. I hope you find something there that encourages you, gives you a glimpse of the beauty in this life, or helps you feel less alone as you spend your days serving your family well.
In Christ,
Heather
Putting The Art of Homemaking on my list. That sounds like a book I will love.
