A few weeks back, I shared some of my favorite homemaking books. Today, I want to pass on a few more of the books that I’ve found useful over the years: my homeschooling must reads!
There are so many excellent titles in the genre of homeschool helps. From encouragement for newbies to practical how-tos, there is something for everyone. And while this absolutely delights me (when I started homeschooling, resources were just beginning to expand), it can also cause overload— especially if you’re new to the game. My list includes several of today’s more popular guides (like The Brave Learner, which I found to be an encouraging read), but most are lesser known, and many focus on areas specific to Christian homeschooling.
A few highlights:
The Montessori Toddler is an invaluable resource, in my opinion. It addresses the very specific (and explosive!) developmental growth of this stage in not only biological terms, but practical ones as well. Understanding the why behind behaviors is so helpful for redirecting them and beginning to shape them into Christ-honoring character traits!
Honey for a Teen’s Heart is my go-to guide when placing library holds for my older kids. The bulk of the book is instructional, and I have given it a re-read with each new teen I’ve homeschooled. But the annotated list of over 400 books is what I turn to again and again to help me navigate the sometimes depressing offerings on the teen shelves.
The Convival Homeschool is a beautiful work of Christian encouragement that urges moms to see themselves as being engaged in Gospel work rather than just “homeschool work.” I really can’t recommend this book enough if you are facing burn out or need an answer to the question, “Why don’t you just send them to a Christian school?”
There are many more titles on this list— including some of my own that friends have said have blessed their homeschool. I’d love to hear about your favorite homeschool-related reads!
In Christ,
Heather
