I’m reading the same five chapters over and over? Ugh. What did I sign on for?
If this is what you’re thinking today, you’re not alone. The human brain has a coping mechanism by which repetition is eventually nearly invisible to our eyes; if we’re not careful, the reading of James will become so rote that it will lose its power altogether.
BUT— with just a little attention, something else happens. The same words, over and over, seep into our consciousness and before we know it, we can summon them unbidden. That’s the goal of 31 days in James— becoming so familiar with the wisdom contained there it simply sits in our hearts, ready to jump forward the moment its needed.
So stay strong. There’s a method to the madness, I promise. And tomorrow, we’ll hit more familiar territory as we begin to dig a bit deeper. For today, though, read James. Listen. And don’t let your eyes (or ears) glaze over.
In Christ,
Heather
